We all remember when schools and colleges were temporarily shut down when the cold engulfed the city last year.

Now that we are just a few days away from the beginning of winter, it’s time to dust off your winter gear and stock your pantry with warm beverages; just don’t forget that your home needs insulation too! In order to protect your family from the adverse effects of quintessential Chicago weather, you need to start with your home!

Here are a few tips to help you do so:

Let sunlight in!

Even though the sun shines for just a short duration during winter, don’t hesitate to welcome it in. Keep your curtains wide open to benefit from its natural warmth. Moreover, clean up the windows as regularly as you can, since dirt and dust greatly hinder heat penetration. Use glass doors where you can.

Furthermore, make sure you don’t leave the house without pulling the curtains apart. When you return, pull all the curtains down again. This is to make sure that no heat escapes and the house remains warm throughout the night. If there are parts of the house that don’t receive sunlight at all, don’t open the curtains.

Insulate your house

The best way to keep your home warm and cozy is to get it insulated.

The floor is one of the main culprits when it comes to heat loss. Drape it with thick carpets. Look for any seals and cracks in the walls that might be serving as an entryway for cold air. Seal them up as tightly as you can. Similarly, invest in thick curtains that don’t allow air to pass.

Reglaze the doors and windows. Get a professional to add a layer of insulation to the doors. You can also opt for double-glazing glass for the windows. These are two layers of glass with an inert gas in between. The purpose is to prevent heat from dissipating.

Plus, don’t forget the crawl spaces. Seal down all the vents and openings in your basements, crawlspaces, and attics. You can also insulate the walls using padded material.

Invest in a heat pump!

Over the last few years, heat pumps have emerged as a plausible alternative to some heating appliances. Heat pumps use electricity to move heat around the house to warm it. The biggest advantage is that heat pumps work in both winters—they move heat inside the house—and in summers.

Heat pumps only move heat from one place to another and don’t produce it. This is why they have lower operational and energy costs. Although air-to-air heat pumps are most common, you can also get water source and geothermal heat pumps.

Whether you want to get a Heat Pump Installation Chicago, along with repair, or maintenance, get in touch with Global Heating & Cooling.
