HVAC systems maintain a comfortable indoor environment regardless of the temperatures outside.

So, how do HVAC units keep homes warm in winter? Well, most of them are equipped with a device called an air-source heat pump. When installed and maintained properly, air-source heat pumps are highly efficient. They can deliver 150% to 300% more heat than the electrical energy they consume.

The best way to describe a heat pump is that it is a “heat transporter”. Unlike a furnace which generates warm air, the heat pump of your HVAC unit warms your home by simply cycling out cool air in the winter. This is exactly the opposite of what your compressor does in summers, which is cycling out warm air.

However, just like the other components of a HVAC system, the heat pump is prone to developing over time. Here are some signs that indicate your heat pump is in trouble.

Leaking Fluid

Leaking fluid in the system is perhaps the most common sign of a damaged or faulty heat pump. There are two kinds of fluid contained in the heat pump: refrigerant and condensate. Since condensate is just runoff from the coils, a leak doesn’t pose an immediate threat to the system. However, it’s still something you should address.

A refrigerant leak, on the other hand is a much bigger cause for concern. Refrigerant fluid is crucial for the heat pump to run. As refrigerant levels drop, so will the system’s ability to cool the home.

Refusing to Switch Modes

As we’ve mentioned, one of the biggest advantages of an HVAC system is that it can act as both an air conditioning and heating system. However, this advantage can turn into a pain if the system refuses to switch modes. This mostly happens when there’s an issue with the heat pump’s reversing valve. This valve directs the refrigerant in the system one way or the other in order to make it heat or cool.

Short Cycling

Another common problem that plagues HVAC systems is short cycling. To put it briefly, short cycling is when the heat pump turns on and off every few minutes, which prevents it from a completing a full heating cycle. Short cycling heat pumps are also much likelier to develop additional issue. If you think your heat pump is short cycling, get it inspected by an HVAC expert ASAP.

At Global Heating and Cooling we’re your one-stop solution for all HVAC related repairs. We’re a reputable HVAC Repair company Chicago that offers the highest-quality HVAC related services, including floor heating installation Chicago. Contact us today to find out more!

[1
